Setting Up the Kitchen Hub Display

One of the most visible parts of FamilyHub is the hub display — a wall-mounted or counter-top tablet in the kitchen or living room that shows everything the family needs to know at a glance, always on, always current.

What's on Screen

The dashboard is divided into sections, top to bottom:

  1. Today's tasks — up to 8 task instances due today, color-coded by who they're assigned to. Overdue tasks are highlighted.
  2. Shopping list — unchecked items from the active Boodschappen list, grouped by category
  3. Upcoming calendar events — today and the next few days, with all-day events shown as banners and timed events in a simple list
  4. Completed tasks (optional) — recent task history, configurable by the family admin

An AI input bar sits at the bottom, always ready for a voice or text command.

Updates arrive in real-time via WebSocket — no manual refresh needed. The moment someone checks off a task from their phone, it disappears from the hub display.

Hardware Options

FamilyHub's hub UI works on any tablet. It also looks great on e-ink displays with high contrast and large touch targets.

BOOX Tab Mini C7.8" color e-inkE-ink (color)~EUR280
BOOX Go 10.310.3" B&W e-inkE-ink (B&W)~EUR380
Amazon Fire HD 88" LCDLCD~EUR80

The Fire HD 8 is a great low-cost option for validation. The BOOX tablets give you a proper e-ink experience — no glare, low power draw, readable in direct sunlight.

Kiosk Mode Setup

Option A: Fully Kiosk Browser (Android)

Fully Kiosk Browser is the recommended approach for Android tablets (including Fire HD and BOOX):

  1. Install Fully Kiosk Browser from the Play Store or sideload the APK
  2. Set the Start URL to your FamilyHub URL
  3. Enable Kiosk Mode — this hides the Android navigation bar and prevents exiting the app
  4. Enable Motion Detection to wake the screen when someone approaches
  5. Set Screen Off Timer to match your household hours (e.g., off at 22:00, on at 6:00)

Option B: BOOX Native

BOOX devices run a custom Android build. You can use Fully Kiosk Browser the same way, or use BOOX's built-in "Freeze" app to lock to a single application.

Idle Slideshow

When no one is interacting with the display, it switches to a photo slideshow — cycling through family photos before returning to the dashboard on touch. Configure the slideshow in Admin > Services > Slideshow:

  • Provider — Google Photos (link an album) or Immich (self-hosted photo manager)
  • Idle timeout — how long to wait before switching (default: 10 minutes)
  • Photo rotation — how long each photo is shown (default: 30 seconds)

Tips

  • Wall mount: VESA-compatible mounts exist for most tablets. A simple shelf bracket works too.
  • Power: Run a USB-C cable along the wall to a hidden power socket. The tablet stays on permanent charge.
  • Orientation: Landscape works well for the dashboard layout. Portrait is better for single-list views (e.g., just the shopping list while actively shopping).
  • Night mode: BOOX e-ink tablets have a built-in warm light that can be scheduled — no harsh blue light in the kitchen at night.
